WV Student Athletes: Making the Grade!

During the year, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and Les Schwab Tires sponsor an awards program that recognizes the academic achievement of high school athletic teams and activity programs. Academic state championship teams are determined in each activity and in each classification at the varsity level.

The WVHS Girls Swim/Dive Team, coached by Holly Dunham-Wheeler (head coach) and Heidi Tollackson (dive coach) has been named the 2008 3A Academic Champions with a team grade point average of 3.647.

WVHS's Boys Cross Country Team, coached by Bob Allan, assisted by Jamie Nordstrom, finished 2nd for the 3A ranks with a team g.p.a. of 3.75. Despite finishing with a team g.p.a. of 3.628, the Girls Cross Country Team did not finish in the Top 8 in state…incredible competition!

WVHS's Football Team, coached by Scott Ditter, assisted by Kevin Brennan, Ryan Delozier, Lucas Jaeger, Paul Stephens, and Bob Thornton, finished 4th for the 3A ranks with a team g.p.a. of 3.14.

WVHS's Girls Soccer, coached by John Schubert, assisted by Rick Hill, finished 6th in 3A, with a team g.p.a. of 3.628.

WVHS's Volleyball Team, coached by Katie Orgill, assisted by Sarah Flickinger, Steve Duncan, Brooke Wilson, and Jamie Olsufka, finished 7th in 3A, with a team g.p.a. 3.57.

Congratulations to our student athletes, their parents, teachers and coaches for upholding excellence in academics!

Tardies and Attendance -- A Message From Mr. Hall

RCW 28A.225.010

Being on time to class is important at West Valley High School. Our classes start right away with an "Entry Task" nearly every day in every class. We expect our teachers to quickly take attendance and then move forward with the lessons and activities planned. Most teachers take roll during the Entry Task so there is no time lost. There is much to do and to learn in a limited amount of time. Teachers prepare for their classes making the most of every minute from "Bell to Bell". When a student arrives late it disrupts the educational environment for their classmates and it compromises the instructional practice of the teacher.

Starting 2nd trimester, I have asked teachers to send me a student's name on their THIRD tardy. The student and I will call home together and explain the tardy incident and consequence and we will put a note in the discipline file about the conversation. On a student's FOURTH tardy they will receive step one of progressive disciplinary action. This is further explained in the 2008-09 Student Handbook (click "Handbook" link above).

----

Excellent attendance at WVHS is crucial to the educational process. WVHS teachers are committed to having dynamic, active classes. If a student is gone, late, or leaves early it hurts their education as well as the education of their peers. Well-meaning parents and hard-working teachers have to spend valuable educational time dealing with students that miss class, are late to class, or leave class without permission. Above all, it is abundantly clear that if students are not in WVHS classes they do not perform well in WVHS classes.

Please note that it is the school that ultimately excuses students for any absences. Notes from home or phone calls are part of the process for excusing an absence but the school is ultimately responsible for excusing an absence. WVHS may not excuse every absence, even if there is a note or a phone call from a parent. Parents and students should make every effort to make sure students are attending every day.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the attendance policy.

Jake Hall, Assistant Principal
