Course Overview
This class will count as a Physical Education or Occupational credit. Fridays will be large group instruction. Depending on the rotation, Tuesday and Thursday classes will be in the gym and Monday and Wednesday will be in Room 801. This new course combines the fitness components from Physical Education with the food lab and nutrition elements from a Family and Consumer Science class.
 
The exercise portion will include an individual fitness plan for life, cardiovascular fitness, aerobics, lifetime sports skills, target heart rate, motivation, stress release, relaxation, flexibility and overall body strength.  The issues covered in nutrition will include basal metabolism, dietary guidelines, weight loss and quackery, label reading, vegetarianism lifestyle, sports nutrition, supplements, and low-fat cooking.
 
Career exploration will also be completed in the Health and Human Services Pathway.
 
Student Learning Objectives
As a result of required instruction the student will be able to:
1. Students will complete a fitness test so that they will know their current fitness level for the Dine Healthy analysis.
2. Students will explore different ways to keep physically fit. They will learn how to properly execute aerobic movements, such as step aerobics, kick boxing, speed walking, jogging, abdominal exercises, yoga, pilates, and various complete body toning activities.
3. Students will learn the importance of cardiovascular exercise and the benefits mentally, physically, and emotionally.
4. Students will explore a variety of exercises that they can do on their own, without joining a gym, so that they can gain knowledge on physical fitness for their entire life, using videos, nature-the outdoors, thera-bands, hand weights, jump ropes, etc. This will help them to be able to develop their life long fitness plan.
5. Complete a dietary analysis using Dine Healthy and their current level of fitness and then develop a lifelong fitness plan.
6. Research and present a brochure on one of the many nutrition or fitness topics for a particular audience.
7. Investigate a career search or do a job shadow on a career in the Health and Human Services Pathway.
8. Safely plan, prepare and serve labs to meet nutrition and wellness needs for individuals families.
