Course Overview
This course provides a study of a child’s physical, social, emotional and mental development from pre-natal to birth to school age. First aid will be reviewed.  Parenting styles and discipline techniques will be practiced. Students may participate in the empathy belly pregnancy simulation and the Baby Think it Over/Real Care Baby parenting simulation. Another option is the family traditions project. Projects will allow them to explore careers working with children or topics of interest relating to children. Because of the component where students are placed one day a week in an elementary or child-care facility, this is a good course for fields where your careers involves children. It also requires transportation to and from the elementary school. Students need to be 16 and able to drive themselves, usually a junior standing. A community service project will be planned and implemented.

As a result of required instruction, the student will be able to:
1. Read text and complete assessments on course content, approximately 17 chapters.
2. Present mini-reports on safety and birth defects.
3. Research, write and present a report on a career, family traditions, or current topic of interest in the course.
4. Participate in 8-9 experiences with children in the elementary schools one day a week and complete the paperwork for a job shadow.
