Course Overview
This course offers study areas to benefit the person who desires independent living skills. The following areas will be covered: resume, job interview, job application, personal appearance and interviewing skills, deciding housing from available types, roommate situations, management of money resources including credit, checking and debit accounts, shopping hints for food, insurance, investing and taxes. In the area of health and fitness, students will investigate the symptoms and treatment of drug/alcohol abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, personal safety, sexual harassment and dating issues. Mental health diseases will be identified by symptoms.
 
Student Learning Objectives
As a result of required instruction, the student will be able to:
1. Determine and explore necessary expenses for living creating a budget.
2. Practice independent living in a 3 week unit called Reality check.
3. Explore individual responsibility toward controlling communicable sexually transmitted diseases.
4. Analyze information concerning aspects of drugs abuse, write a report and present it to the class.
5. Prepare cooking lab to practice buying food and evaluating unit pricing.
6. Identify the symptoms of various mental health diseases.
7. Learn to write checks, reconcile a checkbook and analyze advantages & disadvantages of credit cards.
