Proofreader’s Marks

 

* Use this for editing your papers and for a reference to teacher’s and peer’s comments.

                                              

frag. = fragment of a sentence; usually fixed with adding the missing subject, verb, etc.

 

R/O = run-on sentence; usually fixed with more punctuation or being rewritten

 

CS = comma splice (two sentences stuck together with a comma in between); usually fixed by rewriting as two separate sentences, use of semicolon or colon, or rewritten correctly

 

wc = word is wrong or doesn’t fit

 

^ = insert

 

    = insert a space

 

awk = awkward

 

    = begin a new paragraph/indent

 

    = do not begin a new paragraph here

 

sp  = spelling error  or usage spelling error (there, their, they’re; to, too, etc.)

 

#   = write out number

 

        = transpose   e c t.  (should be etc.)

 

b  = capitalize letter

 

B  = lowercase letter

 

     = close up space

 

word   = delete

 

    = add a period
