“Tomorrow’s diesel mechanics, doctors, radiologists, journalists, architects, office managers, fruit marketers, computer technicians are in West Valley’s classrooms today. They have the potential and motivation. All they need to reach their goals is your support. They need financial assistance, and they need to know that you believe in them.” Sheryl Pace-Opfer, 1984 WV grad

Application Guidelines

Applications are available in the high school counseling office.

Applicant must be a high school senior “on track” to receive a diploma from West Valley High School .

Recipients may choose to attend an accredited public or private two-year or four-year college or a vocational school anywhere in the United States .

Most awards are given in $500, $750, or $1000 amounts depending on the source of the specific scholarship.

Scholarships are paid directly to the school, not the student.

Awards must be used within two years of high school graduation.

The selection process is objective and non-discriminatory. Applications are reviewed “blind” with the student’s name and personal data unknown to evaluators. Chosen from the community, six different evaluators each score one specific section of the application independently. The results are tallied for a final score. Applicants receive points for class ranking, the teacher appraisal, work, school and community activities, national test scores, and two short essays. The total score is based on all the information submitted, so it is in the student’s best interest to fill out the application completely.

Financial need is taken into consideration for those students who choose to complete the optional financial assistance form. It is only one of many factors that determine the selection of recipients. A third party, not associated with WVDFS assesses financial need from the completed forms.

Scholarships are awarded to the students on Senior Night.
