To be eligible for a diploma (and the graduation ceremony), WVHS students must earn their "Certificate of Academic Achievement" (CAA) or CAA Option. The most common and the simplest way to earn the CAA is to:
1. Meet WVSD credit requirements
2. Earn mastery on the Senior Project, and
3. Pass the 10th grade Reading, Writing, and Math* WASL.
However, AFTER at least one attempt on the 10th grade Reading, Writing, and Math WASL, students may be eligible for a CAA Option. These Options include:
-
AP and College Admission Test Scores: Students may use their scores on the SAT, ACT and specified Advanced Placement examinations to show they have key skills. PSAT scores may be used until August 2008.
-
Collection of Evidence: Students compile a set of classroom work samples with the help of a teacher. Collections for students in Career and Technical Education programs can include work from their program and other classes.
-
WASL/Grades Comparison: A student’s grades in math courses and/or English courses are compared with the grades of students who took the same courses AND passed the WASL. This option is available to students in their senior year. This option is only available to students with a 3.2 or higher GPA.
* If a student does not meet standard on the Math WASL they may still be able to graduate IF they do the following state requirements:
-
Earn 2.0 Math Credits: The student must earn 1.0 Math credits their Junior year and also their Senior year. This means that the student needs to take AND pass two math classes their Junior and Senior years.
-
Retake the WASL: Students must retake the Math WASL annually. Students do not need to pass the Math WASL but they must make a reasonable attempt as defined by WASL administration protocol.

NOTE: The information posted here follows Federal, State, and Local guidelines. Here is an excerpt from WVSD Policy 2410:
In accordance with RCW 28A.655.061, the District will comply with the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to facilitate the process for students to obtain the Certificate of Academic Achievement or the Certificate of Individual Achievement. In accordance with RCW 28A.655.065, the District will facilitate objective alternative assessment methods for students who meet eligibility requirements, “including but not limited to attendance criteria and participation in the remediation or supplemental instruction contained in the student learning plan.” At a minimum, the student learning plan will contain provisions for the student to attend school regularly and to attend summer school. For the purpose of determining eligibility for alternative assessment methods, regular school attendance is defined as no more than six (6) absences, excused and/or unexcused, per trimester in core academic classes: language arts, social studies, math and science. For the purpose of determining eligibility for alternative assessment methods, summer school attendance must be completed in a summer school class that is aligned with the state essential academic learning requirements. Students who demonstrate a pattern of non-attendance, excused or non-excused, cannot reasonably expect to gain the core skills and knowledge necessary to meet the state academic standards. In accordance with RCW 28A.655.065, “the school district may waive attendance and/or remediation criteria for special, unavoidable circumstances.” To request a waiver of the attendance and/or remediation criteria, the student must submit the request in writing to the building principal. In the written request, the student must explain the student’s special, unavoidable circumstances. The building principal will issue a decision in writing to the student and parent/guardian regarding the student’s eligibility to participate in the objective alternative assessment.
