WORK STUDY
An elective in the WV RAP Curriculum
Policy & Syllabus
Class description:
Students who are employed have the opportunity to learn valuable skills not easily addressed in the traditional classroom. This course is for employed students that would like to formalize their work-based learning to earn credit. In addition to documenting their work time, students will complete a variety of projects including reflecting on and showcasing their new skills. Strict attention must be paid to class procedures or credit will not be granted.
Policies:
- Students must sign up for the course and can NOT turn in hours worked before they started the course. Credit will only be granted for hours worked during the school year and AFTER the student signed up for the course.
- Students must report hours worked on a DAILY basis. At least one pay stub from each month of employment must be on file in RAP.
- Students will complete all corresponding assignments BEFORE credit will be granted, even if enough hours have accumulated. The projects should be completed while the hours are being worked. If students have not completed the projects within one month of earning the required number of hours, they risk loosing the opportunity to earn work study credit.
- Only formal employment that generates a pay stub showing taxes and Social Security withholdings can be counted. Work for family members (chores) may not be counted. If the job is of a voluntary nature with a non-profit, talk to the teacher and they will contact the nonprofit to see if the work is eligible and to determine how the time will be documented.
- Failure to comply with any of the policies will result in the loss of this opportunity.
Requirements:
- 200 hours + 2 projects = .5 credit
- Projects must be of high school quality and meet the requirements for an A or B.
- Check the class webpage as well as with your teacher to be sure you understand which projects must be completed by the time you are done earning your hours.
- IN NO CASES WILL CREDIT BE AWARDED W/O COMPLETION OF THE CORESPONDING PROJECTS.
The projects for the first semester of Work Study are defined. For additional semesters students choose two projects from a list of options. If you have questions, be sure to ask EARLY and make sure you are SIGNED UP for the class so your hours will start counting as soon as you get a job or the school year starts. THIS IS THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY.
