Nutritional Analysis
Health Project #3

Please use these instructions instead of the Essay in A+.

Part One:

Keep a food log of EVERYTHING you eat for THREE days. Use the container the food comes in to estimate how many servings you ate. This list doesn't need to be fancy - it needs to be detailed and complete.

Example Food Log

Part Two:

Take some time to explore the US Department of Agriculture's website on healthy eating. You've probably seen the Food Pyramid before - this is an in-depth analysis of that tool.

My Pyramid Website

After gaining a basic understanding of the pyramid and its recommendations, pick your healthiest day of eating. You are going to use the My Pyramid Tracker tool to analyze your eating for that one day. Find the link to the My Pyramid Tracker on the webpage. It is listed in the upper left hand menu and half way down on the right side of the page.

Click on the "Assess Your Food Intake" link and register. Be sure to save the log in name and password that you complete so you can get back here!

This is now a "reading" assignment. Follow their instructions to input the food from your food log. Pay attention to detail, including serving size. When you are done study the analysis the site does of your eating habits.

You will need to print the report that shows how your eating measures up to the recommended amounts in each part of the pyramid.

Part Three:

Write a one-page paper (double spaced) that summarizes your eating analysis. Make a comment about each of the 6 sections of the pyramid and how you did in each one. What adjustments would you need to make in your eating to be more healthy? You might visit the "Tips" section to get some specific ideas.

WHAT DO I NEED TO TURN IN?

Please staple final copies in this order:

Food Log (typed or handwritten)
My Pyramid Report
Summary/Recommendations Paper

Grading

A
All three pieces show that the student took the assignment seriously and tried to learn from it. The summary paper includes detail, specific ideas for improvement and is an honest self-assessment. The paper has no distracting typos or other errors.
B
All three pieces are done. They might look rushed or need another round of proofreading. The paper does draw some conclusions and apply the info from the report, but the connections are somewhat obvious and superficial.
