A Little About Volleyball
"Mintonette" was a game invented by William G. Morgan in 1895. So what, right? Well, "Mintonette" is a game that you might know better as Volleyball. Morgan invented the game to be a combination of basketball, tennis, baseball, and handball. What a combo!Volleyball didn't start out the way it's played today. It took years to perfect the sport. The special Volleyball ball wasn't even invented until about 5 years after the sport itself. Originally, the game was played until one team acquired 21 points. That was changed to 15 points in 1917. The first YMCA national championships were held in Brooklyn, NY in 1922. It hosted 27 teams from 11 states.
As volleyball progressed, it became obvious that tournaments and rules were needed. Thus the USVBA (United States Volleyball Association) was formed in 1928. Today that same organization still exists, but is known as USA Volleyball. With the founding of USVBA, it became possible for teams that were not connected to YMCA to compete. In 1949 the first world championships were held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and in 1964 Volleyball was introduced to the Olympic games in Tokyo. The World League was formed nearly a century after Volleyball was created, in 1990.
