Escape the Escape: A Youth-Created Campaign Using Art to Inspire Change
May 1, 2025
West Valley School District is proud to support Escape the Escape, a youth-driven opioid prevention campaign spreading throughout the Yakima Valley. Developed in partnership by the Yakima Health District (YHD) and Yakima Neighborhood Health (YNHS), this initiative is not only for youth—it was created by youth.
From the name, Escape the Escape, to the logo and website design, local youth played a leading role in shaping the campaign. Their voices and experiences have informed every aspect of this growing movement, which aims to raise awareness about the risks of opioid abuse and connect their peers to support and resources.
The campaign features eye-catching posters designed by a local youth artist, now being distributed across schools, including here in West Valley. These materials are part of a broader outreach effort that includes social media ads, billboards, and digital content, all focused on reaching young people where they are.
Youth are also participating in ongoing focus groups to guide the next phases of the campaign. All youth are encouraged to submit original art, poetry, stories, videos, or whatever art medium they choose through the Escape the Escape website's Creator Gallery. Submissions may be featured on the Yakima Health District and Yakima Neighborhood Health social media platforms and could be used in future campaign materials.
Stipends to support art supply costs are available through May 31. By sharing their creativity and stories, local youth are leading a powerful effort to raise awareness, support one another, and change the conversation around opioid use in our community.
